Donegal’s stunning Sliabh Liag cliffs have the potential to become one of Ireland’s most popular tourist attractions.
Hundreds of thousands of people visit the Cliffs of Moher every year and they are a household name, but Sliabh Liag in south-west Donegal attracts only a fraction of visitors compared with the Clare hot-spot.
Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan TD has just announced a grant of almost €2million for the development of facilities at Sliabh Liag.
“It is hoped to transform the Slieve League Cliffs and the immediate hinterland into a world class visitor attraction,” she expained.
“The cliffs at Sliabh Liag are a spectacular tourist attraction, a majestic area which will now be developed into a world class visitor attraction. It now has flagship project status under the NDP and I feel that we’re likely to see a major surge in visitor numbers to this area through increased state investment in marketing and upgrading of local infrastructure. Those who make the effort to come are generally awestruck, with the sea-cliffs being among the highest in Europe standing at 1,972 feet,” she stated.
“Key to this proposal is ensuring that the site maintains its environmental, cultural and heritage values. This will be achieved through further development of the site as a first class walking/hill walking attraction, a family-friendly cultural and heritage attraction with increased amenities for visitors and a vibrant local community based environmental tourist destination.”
The grant will be used to fund very necessary road access improvement, walking routes, transport at the site and improvements to the car park,” she explained.
The Tánaiste also complimented local Councillor Brendan Byrne for his role in assisting in securing the funds which have been approved by the Fáilte Ireland Authority.
