Letterkenny’s Darren McBrearty will be flying the flag for Ireland when he runs in the 800m at the World Junior Track and Field Championships in Moncton, Canada, on Friday.
The DCU student will aiming to build on his pre-Championships momentum, having achieved a new personal best in his last 800m race before flying out to Canada. The challenge that now faces him is to replicate that performance against the best in the world on an international stage.
The heats for the 800m will be held tomorrow (Friday), with the fastest runners making it through to Saturday’s semi-finals. The final takes place on Sunday.
The 19-year-old has already represented Ireland in the 1500m at this year’s Championships. However, McBrearty failed to deliver his best performance and finished 13th in the 1500m heats on Monday in a time of 3:52.62.
The 800m race is another opportunity for one of the county’s best young athletes to make an impact.
