Letterkenny boxer Cathal McMonagle will follow up on his title-winning performance in last weekend’s Elite National Senior Championships with an appearance for Ireland against one of Italy’s top fighters in the National Stadium on Friday.
The Holy Trinity super-heavyweight gave one of the performances of the Championships last Saturday when he staged an incredible comeback in a nail-biting encounter with Tommy Sheehan. McMonagle trailed 10-5 in the final round of the fight but he overturned the deficit and landed the winning score in the final ten seconds of the match to claim his third senior title.
The new senior champion now faces a tough task when he lines out for Ireland against one of Italy’s foremost boxers on Friday. He will meet the Olympic and double AIBA World Super-heavyweight champion, Roberto Cammerelle.
The Italian previously defeated the 31-year-old Letterkenny man 20-8 in the 2007 European Union final in the National Stadium. Cammerelle is currently ranked number one in the world and will present a formidable challenge for McMonagle.
Ireland will meet the Italians again at the Donegal Celtic club in Belfast on Sunday night.
