One of Ireland’s greatest ever sporting heroes will be the special guest at the 34th Donegal Sports Star Awards which will be held on Friday, January 29th in the Silver Tassie Hotel, Letterkenny.
John Treacy, the current Chief Executive Officer of the Irish Sports Council, is one of Ireland’s most celebrated sporting heroes having excelled in the athletic world, winning the World Cross Country Championships twice in 1978 (Glasgow) and 1979 (Limerick) with his biggest achievement coming at the Los Angeles Olympics five years later when he was a silver medallist in the marathon.
This week it was confirmed that there will be 31 categories with over 120 nominations being received.
There has been intense competition for the winning slots in each category while much interest will centre on who succeeds Kickboxer Tommy McCafferty as the overall Donegal Sports Star for 2009. Among the other winners in recent years has been the rower Sinead Jennings, Sean Gallagher from rallying and cyclist Philip Deignan.
Once again Donegal County Council is main sponsor of the Donegal Sports Star Awards and the local authority will be represented by the Mayor Cllr Brendan Byrne.
Tickets for the presentation function are priced at €35 for adults and €25 for children.
The Sports Star Award night tickets can be had by contacting Noelle on 0879153125.
