King’s Inns Approval for law degrees at LYIT

Posted online: Aug 29th, 2008

LYIT has become one of only two Institutes of Technology in Ireland offering degrees approved by King’s Inns. The BA (Hons) in Law from Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) has been conferred approved degree status by King’s Inns.
The Law School of King’s Inns provides the course of education required to be admitted to the degree of Barrister-at-Law and to be called to the Bar of Ireland. Students graduating from the BA (Hons) in Law will now be eligible to proceed directly to take the King’s Inns entrance exam. Graduates with non-approved degrees are required to undertake an additional two year diploma.
Dr Lynn Ramsey, the new Head of Department of Law and Humanities at LYIT, said, “It is a very real honour for the Department and the School of Business to have received approved degree status. It recognises the quality of the law provision at LYIT and provides enhanced career opportunities for graduates in Donegal. We will continue to work very closely with King’s Inns and look forward to seeing many of our graduates establish successful and exciting careers at the Irish Bar.”
The approved status was conferred after a rigorous process where LYIT worked closely with King’s Inns. Dr Ramsey commended the hard work of her predecessor Mr Dermot Cavanagh and all the academic and administrative staff in securing the award for LYIT, “Dermot has provided us with a wonderful legacy in securing approved degree status. The Department of Law and Humanities look forward to welcoming back our students and meeting the first year students for the start of the new academic year. It is an excellent way to begin my new post with such a prestigious endorsement of the law degree at LYIT. I look forward to building on the achievement in order to continue to provide legal education of the highest quality for our students”.
