Doherty fires Masters to victory

May 9th, 2008

All County League Division 1A

Four Masters 2-12
Glenswilly 0-11
Glenswilly had a couple of chances to take something from this game against Four Masters but a powerful performance by Michael Doherty secured the win for the Donegal men in Tir Chonaill Park on Saturday.
The return of Michael Murphy for Glenswilly was a major boost for the club but, with two goals and 10 points, it was Donegal’s Michael Doherty who was the man of the match.
Indeed it was Doherty that gave the home side the perfect start when he converted an early penalty after Conor McMonagle was fouled inside the square. McMonagle then got in on the act himself as Masters looked to build on their impressive start.
The away side soon started to find some rhythm as County U21 star Gary McFadden started to win some ball in the inside forward line, and it was his two quick fire scores that stirred some life into his team mates, and the men from the Glen could easily have found themselves in front only for some indecisiveness in front of goal.
A sweeping move down field involving Canning, McGinley and Caolan McFadden left the latter one on one with Durcan, but McFadden chose to punch the ball to the net rather that shoot past Donegal’s No 1 and was rightly penalised for the error. With their tails up, the away side continued to press and left only the minimum between the sides when Gerard McGrenra curled over in front of the posts.
Masters dug deep and successive scores from play by Doherty once again put Masters in the ascendancy mid way through the first half. McFadden, the away side’s most productive outlet of the opening exchanges then registered his third of the day after Caolan McFadden had been pulled to the ground.
Karl Lacey, who started the game at midfield for the home side then made a surging run through the middle before off loading to Doherty, and after been upended by Molloy, he coolly fired over from wide on the left.
It was then that Glenswilly decided to spring underage star and Aussie Rules target Michael Murphy into action. And it didn’t take Murphy long to make an impression as he fired over form 30m after been fouled by Shane Carr. But it was Glenswilly that finished the opening half strongest as both McFadden and McGrenra pointed either side of Doherty’s fourth point of the day to go in at the interval trailing by the minimum.
Glenswilly were soon back on level terms moments after the restart when Murphy hooked over on the run. McMonagle and Murphy then traded points before Doherty opened his second half account from a 45m free. A Neil Gallagher mistake gift wrapped Masters next score when he fisted straight to McMonagle. The wing half forward was adjudged to have been fouled on the turn and that indiscipline allowed Doherty to continue building on his personal tally.
