The Letterkenny Town Council passed a motion this week to explore the possibility of Letterkenny gaining city status in the future.
The motion, brought forward by Councillor and Town Mayor Jean Crossan, is set look at the requirements of any given place to become a city and how Letterkenny fairs under these.
Cllr Crossan commented at the meeting that we certainly have some of the requirements already and the city label would add to the town.
“Letterkenny is a very prestigious town and we have so many amenities and services and I can’t see why we don’t have this status,” Cllr Crossan said.
“We already have the Cathedral which is one of the requirements and I intend to pursue this and find out more on what we need. It would add even more prestige to an already prestigious area.”
The motion was agreed upon by all councillors and it was discussed that funding should be sourced for this project.
Cllr Ciaran Brogan said that Letterkenny is by far ahead of other towns in the country.
“We have one of the nicest Cathedrals in the country for starters. Every time I travel to locations down the country on business, I have people telling me and complimenting me on our theatre, our leisure centre, our arts centre and so on.
We are by far ahead of many towns in this country and it is important that we source funding for this,” Cllr Brogan commented.
